Teacher Appreciation Week trends over Google in the United States with a search query reaching over record breaking 10M+ searches as of 5th May, 2020.
Why was Teacher Appreciation Week trending?
National Teacher Day is on Tuesday 5th of May, 2020 this year and during Teacher Appreciation Week, which takes place in the first full week of May. The National Education Association (NEA) is the largest labor union and professional interest group in the United States. The NEA represents the large body of public school teachers, faculty and staffers at colleges and universities while also including the retired educators and college students preparing to become teachers.
A message to educators from the National Education Association president Lily Eskelsen Garcia posted on their YouTube channel:
Education Association and I’m signing on today with the message. For all of the educators out there during our nation’s first social distancing Teacher Appreciation Week. It’s not the ideal circumstance for a big celebration I know that, but we educators have always been really good at improvising when the going gets tough and right now I know it’s tough. These are uncertain times that we live in but there’s one thing that grounds me every day and that’s how inspiring each and every single one of you are. There won’t be any parties or parades. They to decorate my door all the time. We’re not going to have that, but that’s not what Teacher Appreciation Week was ever about. It’s about the educators in Milwaukee who are providing meals for thousands of students and their families throughout the city. It’s about the teachers like Michelle Lien Cardenas from Del Valley Texas, that are lending out their iPads and laptops because they know their kids are being hurt by a lack of equitable access to technology. It’s about Collette Dahl a school nurse from Mukilteo Washington, who dons protective gear and heads to work every other day volunteering at the drive-thru coronavirus testing site in the parking lot of Everett Memorial Stadium. There are countless stories of educators going far beyond the call of duty for the students for their communities because it’s what we do. We help. The road ahead is going to be difficult. We’re all worried about not being able to see and provide for our students every day but, this year for teacher appreciation week we’re going to focus on what we can control. And that’s continuing to help our students our fellow educators and communities every single day. And when we go to bed exhausted after working, what uh, somehow seems like even longer hours than before this crisis because they are longer hours than before this crisis. We can find some peace. The parent-teacher conferences are probably going to be a lot easier next year after a crash course in what we do every day going on in home classrooms. But all kidding aside this will be a teacher appreciation week unlike any other. It’s a time to reflect on how important the calling to our profession truly is, and how central you all are to the lives of every single American. And I couldn’t be prouder to be an educator and part of our amazing NEA family. Thank you all for doing so much. For doing what you just do like breathing. I’m so proud to be the smallest part of us.
Indeed, the message of Gracias at this time of crisis is filled with appreciation and encouragement.
